CROMWELL - Dr. Granville Montgomery "Monty" Winship, age 87, of Cromwell, CT died on April 1, 2007, at The New Britain General Hospital after a short illness. Monty was born April 21, 1919 in Malden, MA, son of the late Charles Francis Winship and Annie Bossie. He was a veteran of the Naval Air Force. He was a graduate of Dartmouth College and received his medical degree from Boston University. He did his internship at Truro Infirmary in New Orleans and served his residency at The Menninger Clinic in Topeka Kansas and at Austin Riggs in Stockbridge, MA. He was the founder of the Psychiatry Department at The Grove Hill Medical Center in New Britain, CT, acting as Chief Psychiatrist there for more than 50 years. After leaving Grove Hill Medical Center, he practiced psychiatry in Newington, CT until his retirement in 2005. Over the years he was a psychiatric consultant to the Hartford, Newington, New Britain and Plainville school systems. He also served as a psychiatric consultant to The Village for Families and Children in Hartford, Cromwell Family Children Center in Cromwell, The Shelton Clinic in New Britain and the Waterbury Child Guidance Clinic. He was an attending psychiatrist at New Britain General Hospital for 40 years. During that time he held various positions including being Chief of The Department of Psychiatry. He was an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at University of Connecticut Medical School. He is honored at The Village for Families and Children by an annual lecture given in his name. Monty is survived by his wife, Steffie Baron Winship of West Palm Beach, FL and his ex-wife and good friend, Persis Winship Carter and her husband George Carter of Duxbury, MA. He is also survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Christopher and Nancy Winship of Chestnut Hill, MA, three daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy Winship-Poole and Allan Poole of Middlefield, CT, Linda Winship Albert and Bruce Albert of Marietta, GA, Susan Winship and John Koenig of Lincoln, MA. He is survived by eight grandchildren: David and Michael Winship; Lindsey and Melanie Poole; Jeffrey and Daniel Mamone; Maxwell and Anderson Koenig; and two step children, David Baron of Boston, MA and Debra Baron of Ormond Beach, FL. Funeral Services will be at the First Church of Christ in New Britain, CT on Thursday, April 5, 2007 at 10:00 a.m. There will be a private burial service in Lexington, MA on Friday, April 6, 2007.
