Barbara P. (Winters) Brown, 87, a long time resident of Kensington, CT, and beloved wife of 61 years of the late Robert N. Brown Sr., passed away peacefully, with her family around her, on October 5, 2024. She was born in New Britain on November 10, 1936, to the late John and Helen (Marine) Winters.
She moved with her parents to Kensington in 1953 and graduated from Berlin High School in 1954. Barbara worked as a bank teller at the Berlin Savings Bank until 1960, when she became the mother of twins. Being a full-time mother and wife kept Barbara very busy as she also was a Cub Scout and a Camp Fire Girls leader. She decided to re-enter the workforce as a part-time secretary at Kensington Grammar School, and later, began working full-time in the Media Center at Berlin High School. The Media Center was where she discovered her talent for photography, and it was a perfect fit for Barbara and her love for reading. After she retired from Berlin High School, she worked part-time for Hartney Chiropractic Care Center in Berlin, CT.
Barbara enjoyed spending time with her friends and reading as many books as she could get her hands on. She also found joy in creative folk art painting. She loved sewing and was especially proud to be part of her daughter‘s theatrical costuming business. She and her husband Bob also enjoyed traveling and ballroom dancing, where they made many new friends. Barbara and Bob were always there to cheer on their grandchildren, and every year during the holidays she and her family would bake hundreds of 3C breads for family and friends, from their secret family recipe.
Barbara leaves behind her family, a son, Robert N. Brown Jr., his wife Annette M. (Zappone) Brown and their two children Collin R. Brown and Allison E. Brown, and a daughter, Roberta H. (Brown) Hamelin, her husband Steven M. Hamelin and their son Ryan R. Hamelin.
Her family would like to express its eternal gratitude for the outstanding care Barbara received from all of the medical professionals, home health care, and long term care personnel.
Calling hours will be at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home of Berlin, 111 Chamberlain Hwy., Berlin, CT on Thursday, October 10, 2024 from 4-7 pm. Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 11th at 9 am followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am at St. Paul Church, 461 Alling St., Berlin CT. Burial will be private in West Lane Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in honor of Barbara to the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library, 234 Kensington Rd., Berlin, CT 06037 (https://berlinpeck.org/donations/).
