Lena A. (Margnelli) Mccarthy

Lena Angelina McCarthy, 97, of East Berlin, widow of John McCarthy, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Wednesday, Feb. 21, 2024 at the Hospital of Central CT in New Britain.

Born in Cromwell, she was the daughter of the late Settimio and Albina (Fiora) Margnelli.  Lena was an East Berlin resident most of her life.  She was formerly employed by the State of CT.  Lena was a devoted member of Sacred Heart Church of East Berlin, where she had served on the Parish Council and as a Eucharistic Minister.  Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, grandchildren and friends.

Surviving are a son, Tom McCarthy and his wife Maureen of Berlin; a daughter, Kathleen Anderson and her husband Darren of East Berlin; a brother, Norman Margnelli and his wife Shirley of Berlin; five grandchildren, Taylor Anderson, Jordan Anderson, Kelsie Anderson, Jake McCarthy and Michael McCarthy; and several nieces and nephews.  Among those who held a special place in her heart is Debbie McMahon, whom she considered a second daughter.  In addition to her husband and parents, Lena was predeceased by a brother, Leo Margnelli.  Lena’s family would like to thank Agnes Matug, for her loving care and friendship that she provided to Lena.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 27, at 9 AM at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home of Berlin, 111 Chamberlain Hwy., Berlin followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM at Sacred Heart Church of East Berlin.  Burial will be in Wilcox Cemetery.  Calling hours are Monday from 5-7 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
