Michael John Hogle, age 79 years, passed away unexpectedly at home on January 18, 2026.
Mike was born in Plattsburgh, NY to parents Darrell Linn Hogle and Mary Kingsbury Hogle. He spent his childhood in Mooers, NY having various rowdy adventures with his brothers David, Robert, Hugh and Patrick.
After his graduation from the Miner Institute in Chazy, NY, Mike moved to Connecticut to attend college at Adelphi Suffolk in Long Island, NY. While living in Connecticut, he met Sharon Young in 1968 through a mutual friend. They were married at the Berlin Congregational Church in 1978. They spent 58 years together.
Mike was an adept artist, in simple pencil and with paint. He would enjoy doodling silly pictures of bucktoothed western cowboy characters he called “geeks” while talking on the phone with friends and family. He worked as a carpenter for the majority of his life, but could do anything from general construction including painting, drywall, roofing, windows, doors, siding, gutters, etc. His crowning achievement was his cabin in Perry Mills, NY along the Great Chazy River. He built the cabin very traditionally alongside his wife Sharon, brothers, their wives and others. They peeled each log by hand and prepared them for construction with antique handtools. Mike and son Michael enjoyed immeasurable trips there together fishing and relaxing enjoying his masterpiece. They began a major restoration of the cabin beginning in 2018 with the help of son Michael’s closest friends. The stately cabin will continue to stand to be enjoyed by friends and family for years to come.
He was an excellent cook, sharing his talents with his family and friends; you could always find a delicious soup or stew percolating in the crockpot. He would joke that he was replacing Dinty Moore. He was head chef for a large Pasta Supper fundraiser for Christian Education of Berlin Congregational Church in Berlin, CT for over a decade. He also previously worked in food service serving fried “Vinci’s Veggies” with his friends in the fair circuit across Connecticut.
His son Michael born in 1984 was the pride of his life. He wrote to him recently that he was the joy and the best and only reason for his life. Recently he enjoyed being a grandfather to Leigh Ann Hogle, daughter of son Michael and his life partner Katie Lyons of Berlin, CT. One pastime they enjoyed together was eating fresh vegetables and raspberries straight from the garden at Grandma and Grandpa’s house.
He loved the outdoors and fishing. He was an excellent caregiver to elderly family members in need; he gave more to others than he cared for himself. He LOVED to tell stories and jokes and make people laugh; stories and jokes that will live on through those who heard them for years to come.
Mike is survived by his wife, Sharon; son, Michael Jeffrey Kingsbury Hogle (Katie Lyons); and his granddaughter, Leigh Ann Hogle. He was predeceased by his parents and his brothers David, Robert, and Patrick.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Berlin Congregational Church in Berlin, CT on Saturday, January 31, 2026 at 11:00 AM. A second memorial service will be held in his home state of New York at a later date to be determined in the spring of 2026.
The family would like to thank the first responders who worked tirelessly to try to resuscitate him. Also, the Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home of Berlin, CT for his preparation for the afterlife.
