Walter R. “Skip” Munson Jr., 87, of Kensington, went home to be with his Lord on Monday, January 20, 2025. He was the husband of Jean Munson.
Born in New Britain, he was the son of the late Walter R. Munson Sr. and Hazel E. (Nyack) Munson. Skip was a long time Kensington resident. He graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with an engineering degree. Skip was formerly employed as a postal clerk for 30 years before retiring. After retiring from the Post Office, Skip and Jean operated Munson Christian Tours for over 25 years. Skip was well known as the caretaker at West Lane Cemetery in Kensington for the past 60 years. He was the third generation in his family to serve at West Lane Cemetery.
Skip was a devoted and lifelong member of Kensington Congregational Church, where he served as a Deacon for many years. He volunteered at the Berlin Free Library, where he served on the Board of Directors and as Vice President and Treasurer. Skip was an accomplished artist, having completed many beautiful paintings. He enjoyed visiting the Billy Graham Cove many times, on his trips to Asheville, N.C. Skip was a survivor of the Hartford Circus Fire.
Surviving are his wife, Jean (McHale O’Connell) Munson; his step children, Lynn DeLima, Karen Juchniewicz, Elaine Fargo, and Colleen Kim; his grandchildren, Laura, Allie, Emily, Jonathan, Hannah, Rebekah, Andrew, and Aaron; his nephews and nieces, Michael, Karl, Barbara and Marilee; and several grandnieces and grandnephews. He was predeceased by a brother, Charles Munson.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at 1 PM at Kensington Congregational Church. A reception will follow at church. Burial will be held privately in West Lane Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Kensington Congregational Church, 312 Percival Ave., Kensington, CT 06037 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105. Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home of Berlin is in charge of arrangements.
