Daniel Mahoney Obituary

Daniel W. Mahoney, 75, of Southington, formerly of Bristol, beloved husband of Linda (Caswell) Mahoney, passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 at Sheriden Woods Health Care Center surrounded by his family. Dan was born on December 31, 1946 in New Britain to the late Walter and Helen (Sullivan) Mahoney.

Dan grew up in Kensington and graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas High School, New Britain, in 1964, and later from Central Connecticut State University with a degree in Education. He went on to teach math, and ultimately became the head of IT at Northwestern Regional School #7 in Winsted, retiring after 43 years in 2013.

An avid sports enthusiast, Dan ran track and cross country in high school and college. He also coached soccer, baseball and cross country for various teams throughout his life, instilling his love of sports and competition in his two sons. A lifelong fan of UConn men’s and women’s basketball, the New York Yankees, and the US national soccer teams, he enjoyed watching games with friends, his sons, and his granddaughters.

Dan especially valued time with his family and close friends, spending endless summer days on  the beach at Cape Cod and Rhode Island, grilling at his home in Bristol, and gardening with his family. Above all, he cherished being “Papa” to his granddaughters. He enjoyed taking them for ice cream whenever they wanted, building snowmen in the winter, and he never missed their sporting and school events.

In addition to his wife Linda, Dan is survived by his two sons, Ryan Mahoney and his wife Melissa of MA, James Mahoney and his wife Stacey of Plainville; his brother, James T. Mahoney and his wife Joyce of ME; his sister, Mary Boyle of Manchester; his mother-in-law, Carolyn Caswell of East Hartford; his sister-in-law, Karen Robson of East Hartford; his brother-in-law, Paul Caswell of Vernon; his three granddaughters, Madeline, Emma and Julia; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his nephew, Stephen Mahoney.
