Herman R. Schmarr, Jr.

Herman R. Schmarr, Jr., 74, of Rockfall, left this world unexpectedly on July 19, 2023 at John Dempsey Hospital.  

Herman was the devoted husband of Alvamarie (Marotta) Schmarr for nearly 37 years. He was the father of Kevin Schmarr (Darlene), Amy Shorette (Ryan), and Eric Schmarr (Nicole).  He was the step-father of Kimberly Bengtson (Joe), Kelly Lagace (Brian) and Kristie Scalzi (Fred).  Herman was the brother of Regina McConachie and the late Katherine Gay.  He was the loving grandfather of Kailey, Evan and Tyler Schmarr, Nathan and Makenzie Shorette, Tanner and Caleb Schmarr, Nicholas Bengtson, Julia Lagace, Anthony Scalzi and Amanda Scalzi and uncle to his three nieces, Alissa Najarian, Lynn Blaney and Kimberly Gay.

Born in New Britain, he was the son of the late Herman R. Schmarr, Sr. and Regina (McGrail) Schmarr.  Herman graduated from New Britain High School and attended Springfield College.  He was an all-star athlete in three sports, baseball, basketball, and football.  Herman was inducted into the New Britain High School Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001.  He retired from the State of Connecticut Department of Revenue Services.

Herman spent his winters in Bradenton, Florida and loved the beach.  He was an avid bike rider and cookie and pie maker.  He thoroughly enjoyed watching his grandchildren play sports and was their biggest cheerleader.  He enjoyed life to the fullest and was always up for an adventure or a spontaneous road trip.  His corny jokes and stories will be sorely missed.  He leaves a giant hole in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Funeral services will be held at the convenience of the family.  Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home of Berlin is in charge of arrangements.
