Irene (Welna) DeVivo, 89, of Kensington died peacefully on Monday, November 14. She was the beloved wife of the late Louis A. DeVivo who died in August of 2015.
Born in New Britain, daughter of the late Joseph and Sophie (Roman) Welna, she graduated from New Britain High School and went on to earn her Bachelors degree from St. Joseph College and her Masters degree from Central Connecticut State College. She taught math, chemistry and biology for many years at Plainville High School as well as advising the dance club. There she met her future husband while she was teaching a dance class and he was the school bus driver. The rest as they say is history, and together they accomplished so much. While raising her two children, she was later a faculty member in the Math Department at University of Hartford.
She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Pat DeVivo, of Kensington; a daughter, Diana I. DeVivo, of Kensington; two adored grandsons, Kyle and his wife, Alex, and Kevin and his wife, Casey; and four great-grandchildren who brought her much joy, Ellie, Jack, Maddie and Cameron DeVivo. She is also survived by a brother and his wife, Dr Joseph and Marianne Welna of South Palm Beach, Florida; a sister-in-law, Patricia R. DeVivo, of Kensington; many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews; and many dear family friends. Her treasured sister and friend Dr. Cecilia Welna, and her brother Henry Welna, predeceased her.
Calling hours will be Thursday, November 17 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home, 111 Chamberlain Highway, Kensington. Funeral Services will be held on Friday, November 18 at 9:00 a.m. from the funeral home, with a funeral liturgy at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 158 Broad St., New Britain. Burial will follow in the South Burying Ground, 87 Southington Road, Kensington.
