Roberta Elizabeth Nonnenmacher Jenkins, 86, of Berlin, CT died peacefully on February 19, 2023 after a short illness. She is survived by her son, Dave Jenkins of Middletown, CT, two loving grandchildren Madeline Jenkins of Berlin, CT and Ryan Jenkins of Boston, MA, and a daughter-in-law Joyce Jenkins of Berlin, CT. Roberta was born December 7, 1936 in Baltimore, MD to Robert Nonnenmacher and Miriam Pardee Baringer. “Nonnie” or “Bobbie” also lived in Ithaca, NY before moving to Connecticut in 1957. She attended Alfred University where she received an Associate’s Degree, earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Quinnipiac College in 1974, and earned a Master’s in Public Administration from the University of New Haven in 1981. She was the Town Clerk of North Branford from 1976 to 1979 and the Town Clerk of Newington from 1980 until her retirement in 1998. In 1996 she was selected by her peers as Connecticut Town Clerk of the Year.
After retirement, she lived for 10 years in Arizona, before returning to Connecticut to be with her grandchildren. She loved baseball and her beloved Baltimore Orioles, and even got to see them win a World Series in 1983 in person. She enjoyed gardening, listening to music and playing bridge. She loved to laugh and make cheeky jokes, and loved dogs and other animals. She never passed up an opportunity for dessert, even if that meant eating dessert before dinner. She was an avid reader and after retirement especially enjoyed volunteering at the Friends of the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library used bookstore. She was also an active member of the Woman’s Club in North Branford and Newington. She enjoyed traveling with friends and told wonderful stories of her many trips. Along the way when traveling, she often could be found purchasing yet another Santa ornament for her collection.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 6 PM at Erickson-Hansen Funeral Home of Berlin, 111 Chamberlain Hwy, Kensington. Calling hours are Monday from 4-6 PM at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to either Friends of the Berlin-Peck Memorial Library or Friends of Berlin Animal Control.
